PCI Drop Dead Date

U.S. Level 4 Merchant Compliance Plan Status Report Deadline is 6/30/2012 (http://usa.visa.com/merchants/risk_management/cisp_key_dates.html). This mean that ALL merchants, including the bulk of all merchants who are considered level 4.

Level 4 Merchants process less than 20,000 Visa or MasterCard e-commerce transactions per year, and all other merchants processing up to 1 million Visa or MasterCards transactions per year.

The scope of this is such as after 6/30/2012 ALL levels of merchants are expected to be PCI/DSS compliant. No excuses, no extra time and a ton of financial penalties for those who are not.

Financially, 1 breach could send most merchants right out of business with fines from $5,000 and up per EACH breached/defrauded/compromised card. If you aren't compliant, you are dead in the water.

Visa Says:

If a member, merchant or service provider does not comply with the security requirements or fails to rectify a security issue, Visa may fine the responsible member. Visa may waive fines in the event of a data compromise if there is no evidence of non-compliance with PCI DSS and Visa rules. To prevent fines a member, merchant, or service provider must maintain full compliance at all times, including at the time of breach as demonstrated during a forensic investigation. Additionally, a member must demonstrate that prior to the compromise the compromised entity had already met the compliance validation requirements, demonstrating full compliance.

We advise that if you haven't started yet, that you start here by reading these 2 common sense tutorials that we wrote to help you deal with the process from a simpler and more straight forward approach.
