Addon Domains allow you to host additional websites using other domain names in your single hosting account. The additional website(s) will be a directory of your current hosting account's file structure and DNS is configured to resolve the directory's contents as its own domain name. Addon domain accounts share the same IP and other account wide metrics as the main account's domain. Addon domains cannot use a private SSL as they cannot have a dedicated IP, they can generally be configured to use the SSL present on the main account however.
Under most hosting conditions a subdomain is an addon domain also. The DNS for a subdomain is changed to resolve to the subdomain's address - subdomain.domain.com.
