Authentication is a web technique in which access to the Internet or intranet resources requires the user to enter a username and password most commonly. Authentication can also be used to require a specific rule set for web site visitors to protect areas more securely. Metrics such as IP or user agent can be used to allow or deny access according to the rule set.
