A hit is any request to the web server for any type of file. This can be an web page, an image, a script and many other file types. An web page can account for several hits in just one load, the page itself, each image on the page, each php include and any embedded sound or video clips for example all will register a hit. The number of hits your website gets is not at all a valid metric for analysis, for this you would look to unique visits.
