Mod_Rewrite is an Apache extension module used to rewrite URL's as they are requested. Often this rewriting is used to rewrite dynamic urls in to more logical, static looking urls. An example of rewriting Zen Cart's dynamic urls for better usability, such as this:

index.php?main_page=products_new

products_new.html
