A referral is a term used to describe traffic visiting a site/page in which a hyperlink/link is clicked on from another website/page bringing them to yours. This hyperlink can be text, an image or any other type of link. When a visitor arrives at your site/page from another site, the server/statistical software records the referring site's/page's information in the hit log and subsequently for every file requested within the visit. If a search engine provided the link, then the search engine name and any keywords used are generally recorded as well by statistical software and often the data is then sorted out in to "Search Engine Traffic" or similar for better analytical opportunity.
