Paid Links and Google Penalties

Google is once again cracking down on paid links. Not only are they cracking down, but they are hitting some big fish. This effort, most likely to set a solid example is quite effective. We know that Google can and will penalize you for paid links that are permitted to pass PageRank… But many seem to ignore this and continue to blatantly buy links.

On 12/10/2010 Google announced they have added a reading level advanced search feature to Google organic search. While I don’t see this as a huge ranking opportunity for ecommerce shops, I do think that Google will adapt some sort of automation for regular organic results…

Google April 2010 PageRank Update

Normally, I would not blog this, as I am a fervent believer in the “PageRank is not a big deal” mentality. You see, I put little if any stock in that little green bar, and instruct our clients likewise. We rather belong to the “build it and they will come” theory of SEO. In part our belief is that natural links, on page optimization, fresh content, elimination of duplication and unique text are in fact the key to organic search success.
